Help & FAQ

Gliglish is a tool to learn languages by speaking. It's a teacher in your pocket: you just talk and learn with your voice, the same way you did as a child.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ป How does it work?

Simply go to gliglish.com/free and start a conversation. To get the best results:

  • Make sure your microphone works. If needed, try this online microphone test. For more help, see the microphone help page.
  • Record in a quiet place, without background noise ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ. Results depend on your microphone, but loud noises and background music will get picked up by voice recognition.

When you're ready, press the Record button and get talking! Gliglish is patient, does not judge you, and people love talking to it to improve their speaking. You're free to talk about whatever you want. Just tell Gliglish what you need! ๐Ÿ™‚

๐ŸŽค How do I get my microphone to work?

First, check that your microphone works at all with this online microphone test. If it works there, it should work on Gliglish too.

For step-by-step instructions for your browser and device, see the microphone help page.

๐Ÿ‘‚ How do I adjust the volume on iPhone?

iPhones have two distinct volume settings: one for media playback and one for recordings and calls. Here's how to adjust each:

  • Media playback volume: used for music, videos, and sounds in apps, including Gliglish before the microphone is activated. Adjust it with the side volume buttons, or with the volume slider in the Control Center.
  • Recordings/call volume: used during phone calls and when the microphone is activated in apps. Adjust it by pressing the side volume buttons while the microphone is active.

So if Gliglish sounds quiet on your iPhone: press the volume-up button while the teacher is talking to you.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Is there a mobile app?

Yes! Gliglish is available for iPhone and iPad: download the app on the App Store.

On Android, open gliglish.com in your browser and use the "Add to Home Screen" button in the main menu. You get a Gliglish icon on your phone and the app opens fullscreen: one tap away, just like a native app.

๐Ÿ”ฎ What's planned for Gliglish?

See the roadmap, and vote for what you want next.

๐Ÿ’ธ Do you offer refunds?

No. When you get a subscription, you agree to waive your right to a refund. You can cancel your subscription at any time, though.

AI costs a lot to run and margins are low: when you record yourself and get a response from Gliglish, it costs me money. You can try Gliglish for free to form an opinion before buying it. Your payments contribute directly to Gliglish's running costs and improvements.

๐Ÿšช How do I cancel?

Just visit gliglish.com/billing (or click "Billing" in the top-right corner of gliglish.com, or "Manage your subscription" on your profile page). You can cancel in a few clicks, no questions asked.

Prefer to pay less instead of leaving? The same page lets you switch to a different plan.

๐Ÿช™ Is usage unlimited?

The free version gives you free speaking time every day. Gliglish Plus is unlimited: practice as much as you want.

Time spent with your language is the best predictor of how good you get, so the more you speak, the faster you learn ๐Ÿ˜Ž

๐Ÿ“‡ How do I contact you?

Need something specific? Found a bug? The best way to reach me is publicly on ๐•/Twitter: @fabiensnauwaert. You can also write to me at [email protected].

๐Ÿ”— What other projects do you have?

If you're learning English, here are a dozen projects created to help you:

  • Click & Speak teaches you 96% of American English, with a focus on speaking: the top 5,000 words with audio, phonetics, examples, and lively dialogues;
  • American IPA Chart teaches you the sounds of American English, visually and memorably (free);
  • Minimal Pairs trains your ears on those sounds: two words, one sound of difference (free);
  • FrequencyList shows you which words to learn first: the 5,000 most common words in spoken English (free);
  • How to Learn English shows you modern methods to improve your English every day (free);
  • Listglish trains your English listening comprehension;
  • BilingueAnglais is my blog about becoming bilingual in English, in French.

If you're not learning English: I will incorporate the best of these projects into Gliglish. For now, check out FrequencyList.com.

I've learned four foreign languages and been teaching English since 2007. Gliglish is my first project to teach more languages. I hope you'll enjoy using it as much as I have fun building it! ๐Ÿค—
